Complete the definition with the correct verb. (British spelling!)
? Answer
‘travel‘, so “travelling” (double ‘l’ in British English, usually Single ‘l’ in American English)
‘homeward’ means towards home, so in the phrase “homeward bound” we actually have a double ‘towards’. The term ‘phrase’ sometimes helps us to avoid these potential problems!
Quiz Question / Video
Who are the two guys in the background of the image? What is their connection to the phrase “homeward bound”?
1. Look at these statements which summarize a short text.
“We have a lot to get through, but a couple of things need our immediate attention.”
“She’s fresh from her studies, but it’s clear she’s keen to make her mark and I’m convinced she’s a high flyer.”
“It saddens me to say, but we don’t have the money to expand our staff, so if we’re taking someone on, someone else needs to go.”
“He lives for the company, and he’s been with us for ages, but recently he’s been causing trouble.”
“His complaining has gone viral, and now nearly the whole workforce is out there protesting.”
” ‘Can the technical FM please come to the boardroom.’ Right, now let’s work out how we’re going to sort out this mess.”
“They’re asking for things we simply can’t deliver. Anyway, let’s go through their complaints one by one and see if we can resolve this as quickly as possible.”
2. Quickly scan the text and reorder it, so it follows the same order as the statements.

Steve: Sales executive for a high street (retailer)
‘Out of (stock)’. I’ve seen it so much lately, or empty shelves at the supermarket. I know there’s been problems in the (supply) chain, but it’ s driving me mad!
Jess: Warehouse Manager for a (wholesaler)
There’s a huge market here for cheap (imports), so we (stock) all of the shelves at the front with that (stuff). No sooner does it come in, than off it goes again to some local store. We have to (restock) every few days, which can be quite (challenging) at times.
Mary: Shopkeeper for her (family-run) hardware store
We do stock locally made products, but look, see the (dust) on these? It makes sense though. Our things cost so much more to produce. And people round here haven’t got two (pennies) to rub together. Funny thing is, they’re the first to complain about foreign imports (ruining) the economy. Well stop buying their things, I say. That usually (shuts) them up.
Clive: Factory Machinist for a hand tool (manufacturer)
If there wasn’t such a big (market) for cheap tools, maybe we would still be a (household) name. Like in the (good) old days. We produce real quality tools here. Good British (steel) and hard wood.
